COLLECTING VINTAGE JEWELLERY

When you begin to collect for yourself or to sell vintage jewellery your budget will probably be small. Therefore you will tend to choose the cheaper items, brooches etc. which will inevitably need repairs. As you progress and you become more discerning and maybe your budget is larger, look for perfect items or as near as possible. A small repair you can do yourself. For example replacing a couple of marcasites or rhinestones. But do not consider tackling large repairs if you are buying to sell unless you are confident of a quality finish. Sourced out these major repairs can be very costly for example replacing a pin or a clasp or a repair to a cameo. Especially the latter which really is a professional piece of work and you will have to weigh up as to whether the return will be worth the outlay.

I would advise against buying enamels which are less than perfect. Most collectors of enamel work do like to see an item with no scratches or missing areas.

So the old adage is true that QUALITY WILL OUT! Higher cost items of jewellery will always hold their value, and increase as the years pass by. Especially those with designer names, unusual articles and especially Art Nouveau and Art deco pieces which seem to be the flavour of the month at the moment.
